Tree of Life

Experimental Design

This technical solution creates a microclimate which reduces the pollution around you and gives you a short moment to escape out of your stressful everyday life. A minute to get “back to nature” with all of your senses. The design of the reactor is inspired by the underwater kelp forests. The atmosphere of the kelp reminds us of a dream world, which radiates a sense of calm.

The foundation of “Tree of Life” is a natural process, called photosynthesis, which is driven by a micro algae. Carbon dioxide is being absorbed by the atmosphere and will be transformed by help of the sunlight into oxygen. A unique process that humans and animals rely on.

Algae are more interesting and important than people think. Scientists have proven that it is the oldest plant on earth and probably the origin of our existence. Every aquatic organism is based on this plant. It is also proven that 50% of the world’s oxygen is produced by algae.

We are pretty fascinated with all of these facts and wanted to translate this into the design of our algae reactor.

The design of our reactor is inspired by underwater kelp forests. The atmosphere of the kelp reminds us of a dream world, which radiates a sense of calm.

We are using “Chlorella Vulgaris”, it’s a micro alga which is characterized by a robust cell wall for longevity. Within the last 2 million years it has resisted every kind of climate change. It is the fastest growing plant on earth. The cell division is 10 times faster than that of terrestrial plants.
